Notre Dame Cathedral: Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ho Chi Minh City Notre Dame Cathedral
  • a different shot than everyone else

  • In a predominantly Buddhist country, Notre Dame stands tall in the center of Saigon. It was built during the late 1870s-1880s by the French (hence the name)

You can visit at anytime, and even attend mass if you desire. Masses are held in Vietnamese and English.

Just remember, places tend to shut down during lunchtime, so you won't be able to get into the cathedral around midday.

    Things To Do: Saigon Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Go stroll around the zoo and feed the elephants.

Sure, the place is a bit dilapidated, but you'll be able to get closer to animals than at most zoos (at least from my experience with ones here in the US).

On nice days, people just enjoy lying around in the grass and benches using the zoo as more like a park.

  • The General Post Office, adjacent to the Notre Dame cathedral, was built from 1886 to 1891 by by Gustave Eiffel. The architecture style is french colonial.

Enter the post office and you'll notice the immense ceilings, it has the feel of a train station.

You also can't miss the massive portrait of good old Ho Chi Minh.

They sell stamps and souveniers inside.

  • Tip Rating:
  • This statue, outside the post office, is a long-withstanding symbol of communism.

interesting pics! it's always better to see some off-the-beaten-path parts of a country, too!

I agree about the best food not being in the fancy restaurants. Love your photo of the rice wine/vipers!

Ice cream... now yet another reson on my list of why I want to go to Viet Nam. And I am a fan of wine, but there are limits!
