  • Who can forget the mental images they formed when the read about Ann Frank and her faimily. As crushing as the reality of her story can be, so also may it be enlightening to know that her story will serve as an example for many generations to come of what man's inhumanity to man really means.
So also may the person, who ever they are, who turned the Frank family in to the Nazi authorities, where ever they may be, realize they will always be remembered as the "traitor" who caused the pain and sorrow people feel. The house and the story here is a lesson to us all, but parents who bring their children should help set the stage with the story of the events that took place here.
The house can be seen from the canal tour, if you have your city map with you for your tram trips, you can orient yourself to be able to find it when you are back "on land". The waiting line can be long, so have some "entertainment" items for younger children with you when you go.

Rijksmuseum: If a rainy day should interrupt your outdoor tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rijkmuseum is a TERRIFIC place to absorbe some history, you can even see a "Rembrandt" or two.
BUT this being the Netherlands, and the Dutch being sailors, and ships being the "stuff" sailors use, ships, actually SHIP MODELS et al are the "order of the day".
Yes there are MANY other things to see, but if your "into boats" the way I am "into boats", you will be happy with MANY of the displays. Not just ships, and boats but the mechinisms that make them work, work better, repair them, build them from "scratch". Many of the models looked like they could have been "patent" models. Full, working, detailed models that are offten required to get a patent issued.
The pictrue I choose to use with this tip is a model of a dry dock that is being used to build a ship. This is VERY detailed but probably was not a patent model, thought it may have been built as a "sales aid" to get investors interested in a project.

Canals, Bridges and Houseboats: Floating temple to American style Suburbia

  • Floating Temple to Suburbia

  • This "example" (?) of an Amsterdam "House Boat" looks more like a temple to American style Suburbia than just about anything else I saw. I did not actualy see a lawn fountain or a lawn mower in this "jungle" but it would not have surprised me at all! For "moor" on boats, canals, trips and treks on water, anchor your sights on my Amsterdam Travelogue - Amsterdam, canals, canals and MORE

You sound like a real jerk.

You are confusing the Oude Kerk and the Nieuwe Kerk here. It is the Nieuwe Kerk that houses the World Press Photography exhibition, and indeed, it is no longer a church, just a building that looks like one :-)

Thanks for the info. Sounds good to me. Another reason to move to Holland -- no right-wing irritants telling me how to live my life because they have a bible that tells them so.
