Stockholm Travel Guide: 4,010 reviews and 9,751 photos
One of our first tours in the city took us to city hall. The guide asked how old I thought the building was. I scanned for clues: the structure lines, the materials used, the basic layout and design, Having duly noted that there seemed to be areas that had been renovated, window and doorways bricked up etc. I told her "maybe in the 1600's". She laughed (gently) and told me I was "right on" for the design; that the apparent renovations of bricked up window and doorways had "done their job". The building was designed based on a 15th century plan, the city had carefully, faithfully sought building materials that had the same appearance but in fact the structure had been built only 5 years ago!
Such are the lengths that Europeans will go to to attempt to make things look like the "fit" the image.
