Canyonlands

527 Square miles of untrammeled Beauty!!

La Sal Mtns. from Island in the Sky
Canyonlands National Park is cut by the Green River and the Colorado River into three distinct and very different areas. Island in the Sky is the most travelled because it has the most paved roads. Vegetation is sparse and the view stretches for hundreds of miles. The Maze is the most inaccesible region of the park. It has been described as "a 30 square mile puzzle in sandstone" because of the jumble of canyons. There are no paved roads, only four wheel drive roads. Few people venture here! The Needles District gets its name from the red and white rock pinnacles dotting its landscape. Primitive trails and four wheel drive roads lead to the Confluence Overlook, 1,000 feet above the meeting place of the Green and Colorado Rivers. Once again, there is a paved road, but to explore...you must do it on foot or in a four wheel drive vehicle.

Another one of your beautiful National Park pages. You've been to some great places! Glad to hear this one is unspoiled and untouched.

I spent the night once in the La Sal mountains but it was not a pleasant memory. This (like Arches) is best seen under helpful sunlight.

Okay Jen, did you survive the Maze? The crater in the Island of the Sky sounds really interesting. What do the Native Americans believe?
