I think the Anne Frank House is a requisite when visiting Amsterdam! While this museum has gone through a lot of renovation to handle the amount of people who visit, the Secret Annex has maintained its authenticity. Once you step foot past the bookcase that hid the secret stairs, you can feel what it must have been like for 8 people in hiding. Don't let the long queue outside discourage you from visiting...it moves quickly. The video clips of Miep and Otto are particularly moving, as are the actual writings of Anne herself!

This museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world as well as writings by the tormented artist to his confidante and brother, Theo. Here, you can compare his works to the works of other 19th century artists such as Denis, Chagall, Monet, and Manet! No pictures allowed, but I managed to get two before I was caught!! Daily 10-6 Friday 10-10 Adults 10 EURO 13-17 2.50 EURO to 12 FREE

The 300 seat Leidseplein Theatre is home to improvisational theatre at its best! Boom Chicago offers different themed shows that are improv or scripted or a mix of both! Audience participation is encouraged, but not mandatory...and ALWAYS hilarious!! Come to the early show and have dinner and drinks before or just come early and hang out at the bar.

No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a walk through the red light district! While it was interesting and fascinating, it was also annoying having drunk and high men bothering us constantly. We thought we would be okay as we were there during the day. It is a very unique area and must be explored.I have heard from others that the sex shows are also quite interesting. Had we been in a group, we would have done that.....maybe next time!

At the heart of the square sits the Royal Palace. It was once known as the Town Hall. Construction was begun in 1648 and the outside was completed in 1665. The inside took another 10 years to complete. The dome is crowned by a weather vane in the shape of a cargo ship, which is the oldest version of the Amsterdam coat of arms. Due to time constraints, we did not go inside, but heard that it is a must see due to the ornate decoration of the interior.

This National Monument sits across from the Royal Palace and resembles a large phallus. I mean no disrespect, but I found it humorous being that it is in such an "open" society.......but, I digress. It was unveiled by Queen Juliana of Orange on May 4, 1956 and is adorned with intricate sculptures and Dutch carvings!

urvashi123 Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:31 UTC Hello Jen your Amsterdam page is really good.Well i Have a dream to visit these places, hopefully it will come true. The best thing i liked about cycling around in Amsterdam. good work. | nora_south_africa Sun Apr 6, 2008 14:44 UTC flower market looks amazing | flyingscot4 Fri Oct 5, 2007 15:57 UTC No question about it; Amsterdam (The Netherlands) is the best place to start a tour of Europe. There is NO language barrier because of English fluency among the population. More important, they WANT to practice their English. | globetrott Thu Mar 15, 2007 19:38 UTC a nice page bringing back great memories. Dog-poo may be found at many cities in Europe unfortunately, but people start to change that (hopefully soon...) |
