Frankfurt resembles other large cities across the world, and is mostly void of historical architecture after WWII. From the airport, take the S-Bahn to the main bahnhof and visit the Frankfurt tourist office, where you can purchase a ticket for a 2 1/2 hr city tour about the city. On this tour you will visit a small section of the "old" Frankfurt, amazingly restored to pre-war form. Even for a large city, litter is a minimum and the people are welcoming.
