I decided to make a stop in Bamberg not long before I departed for Germany. I originally was going to stay in Nuremburg as a halfway point between Salzburg and Dresden, but after reading how commercalized the Nuremburg Christmas market had become - which was the primary theme of my journey - I opted for Bamberg instead.
I was not disappointed. Bamberg turned out to be one of the most charming places in Germany that I have visited. I completely understand why this town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old part of town is very walkable for those who are so inclined. If you want to experience the storybook Germany that you have read about, give Bamberg a try.
By the way - I thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas market as well as the all of the historical offerings the town had to offer.
Here's a tip - have a map before you head out - or take lots of breadcrumbs. There seems to be a church on every corner, and the streets twist and turn, so it can be easy to get turned around if you get off of the beaten path. I chose to keep following what interested me - which always seemed to be just up ahead or around the corner. Before long, I was way off the beaten path, but since I had also brought a map, I quickly got back on track and back to my hotel. |
