Krakow - Cracow - Cracovia

Cosmopolitan Eastern Europe

Krakow from Wawel Castle
Krakow is a favorite place. For me it captures the essence of ancient Europe with all the wonderful architecture and mystery you would expect from a city which is over a millennium old. It also holds many personal memories for me over my two visits including a very special long weekend there with son Michael in 1998.

Most of my time was spent in the Old Town area of Krakow which I am certain denied me some wonderful additional experiences, but this core area is so enchanting that it is difficult to feel deprived. Unlike most cities in Poland, much of Krakow escaped undamaged during World War II. It seems the Nazi high command liked the city for their personal use. The buildings of Old Town consequently have not required the reconstruction that similar areas in other cities such as Warsaw have needed. Small consolation in view of the dark deeds which were occurring so very nearby.

Still what remains is truly remarkable. Architecture which has an organic sense of development, blending styles and building techniques over 1000 years of growth. Today the city is as cosmopolitan as any in Europe.

You have reminded me that I should re-visit Krakow, haven't been there for ages and when I was it was mostly on my way to the Tatra Mountains. Excellent page with interesting reflections.
