I traveled to York several years ago. Back then, I have to admit, travel was far more casual for me than it is today. Not entirely a bad thing but I think I may have missed some perspective as to what I was experiencing. Still there is something to be said for the "Wow, did you know..." factor as you stumble upon things. In York you stumble constantly.
Their history is both broad and deep (literally based on excavations below York Minster) with significant rule by the Romans, the Anglo Saxons, The Vikings and the Normans. The medieval manifestations are certainly the most obvious with its walls and towers and, of course, the Minster itself, but you will also find numerous museums and archeological exhibits of the Viking, Norman and other eras.
The City of York itself is definitely worth a visit as one of the most charming and historically significant places in England. Beyond the city, the area of Yorkshire is an absolutely beautiful place rich as well with history and fascinating architecture. |
