First I must thank Virtual Tourist "Mavens of the Veneto" Sandy Smith(sandysmith) and Simone(sim1) for inspiring Carol and me to venture off the beaten track or perhaps, more accurately, off the churned channel to the Island of Burano. We had actually planned a two part trip, with half a day in Burano and the afternoon in the more well known glass making center of Murano. As it turned out we became so enchanted with Burano that we spent nearly all day there with only a "now-we-can-say-we've-been-there" stop at Murano on the way back. But Burano filled more than our day. It filled our spirit and our memories with wonderful images of a relatively unknown spot less than an hour from one of the most visited places in the world. |
| Church of San Martino across the lagoon |
| | The day we traveled to Burano the weather was pretty hazy on the lagoon. We departed Venice on the Number 12 vaparetto from the Fondamenta Nuove in Cannaregio. The ride, I believe, was about forty minutes including a stop at Murano. As we moved closer to Burano we started to notice a campanile in the distance but it didn't seem quite right. Was it an illusion or was that tower leaning over? No, this was no illusion. This was the 16th century Church of San Martino with its much younger 18th century bell tower. We later learned that the locals called it their "crooked" tower. In any event, if you are navigating across the lagoon its pretty hard to miss. |
| Fondementa Assassini in Burano |
| | Arrival at the vaparetto stop on Burano was at a waterfront park with no particular indication as to which direction to go. Several people headed off to the left so we followed. This led us quickly to Fondementa Assassini and ultimately to the main commercial street Via Galuppi. Immediately we became aware of the more casual and working class nature of this charming place. Here paint replaced fresco and stucco sufficed for marble. Here the tourists were as as welcome as anywhere but at the end of the day we felt the shop owners and restauranteurs went home "upstairs". Burano felt like hometown. |
