Bangkit Aceh!! (Wake Up Aceh)

by Rinjani - last update: Apr 14, 2008

Welcome to my Banda Aceh page.

West Coast of Aceh
After glittering life in Dubai, my next destination is turn to be Aceh, a place where my parents come from.
And although it's rarely a good news if media writes about Aceh and what has happened in Aceh,
I am still proud to be Acehnese!

Fact About Aceh

Aceh is the most west province of Indonesia, Daerah Istimewa Aceh, is 57.365,57 km square. It consists of 119 islands, 35 mountains and 73 main rivers. (Data from Waspada online)

Aceh is rich with natural resources. Both for the cultural and natural perspective. Adventurer will love to explore its rain forest with a chance to spot the tiger, bear and many other inhabitants of Aceh forest. Beaches are beautiful, and many beaches are 'untouched'. (Although there are not many sunbathers seen on the beach, especially after the tsunami.)

Although the infrastructure to support tourism is not so good,
Aceh is enjoyable from the cultural and beautiful scenery point of view.
New houses are taking place

Weep no More Aceh!

Those who are interested in history will be likely observing Aceh closely. During the Dutch colonialism in Indonesia, Aceh has already well known as 'stubborn region' that refused to be governed. And the bloody fighting has been done not only by the men. At the early stage of Indonesia history, Acehnese women also involved in the attempt to get rid the colonialism. Cut Nyak Dhien, Cut Meutia and the famous Malahayati who organized widowers to fight against the colonial are among the Acehnese women heroines.

After a long battle history, another chapter of Aceh history still records another dark chapter. In decade of 80s to 90s, special status as 'Military Operational Region' was implemented in Aceh due to dispute between Indonesia government and Free Aceh Movement. Regardless who is right or wrong, the whole situation left many orphans children and widowers. The live of Acehnese filled with poverty, insecurity and depression.

Again, the cry, tears and suffer have not yet ended in Aceh. At the end of 2004, a tidal wave hit Aceh region, took near 200.000 live alone in Aceh and left many homeless people.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no more fight that day, all Acehnese are united in the suffering and devastating cry for the loss.

In every hardship there is always a meaning.

Will it be a new history for Aceh? A better one?

Aceh Today

The encouraging news about Aceh that there is peace process between Free Aceh Movement and Government of Indonesia. We all hope that there will be peace in this beautiful province. And people can explore Aceh without feeling scared or concern about the security.

The reconstruction in Aceh is still going on.

There are a lot of international NGOs in Aceh to assist the recovery and reconstruction process.

Slowly, I will build my Aceh page and share with you about live in Aceh

Aceh is like a new international village, where you can find contribution from nearly all countries worldwide. The helping hands and genuine contribution from people from the other side of the globe, has brought Aceh to a new stage. From emergency and recovery, Aceh now is moving to development stage. It is encouraging to see development activities is taking place in this province.
.

Closing Note:
In my Aceh page, I would like to dedicate this page for my relatives who were taken by the tidal waves. May peace with all of you.

And I would like to share the information for VT-ers who (probably) are interested to go to Aceh, I hope the information will be useful for you.

I am surprised to read that you would not have been able to get a room at the Gayoland Hotel. I stayed there in November 2006, arrived at 11.30pm, got my room and went out to eat in the main street 2.30am to go to my room.

HI Rinjani, Was wondering if volunteers are still needed to help in tsunami-hit areas? What would be a good place to start enquiring once I'm in Banda Aceh? Tq!

Looks like you've got enough material here for a book! I wonder, though - how is the scuba diving on Aceh?
