Above the Arctic Circle

by fairy_dust - last update: May 1, 2004

A reindeer fur covered bed in the Ice Hotel
While studying in Sundsvall, Sweden as an exchange student for a semester, I and other exchange students in the program decided to take a weekend trip to Kiruna. Kiruna is a small town in northern Sweden, above the Arctic Circle (though we were lucky that it wasn't too cold on the weekend we visited!). It is home of the famous Ice Hotel (though there is an Ice Hotel in Canada too). The Sami people (a tribe of Nomadic people in Scandinavia) also live in that area.

Pros:"The ice hotel, the tours/safaris"
Cons:"very cold weather, sleepy town"
In A Nutshell:"It's small, but worth visiting."

Always wanted to go to the Ice Hotel. Seems very very cold tho! Greetings from the southern part of Sweden! :)

Nice page! :) Although Kiruna DOES have public transport and is a town, not a little village. Maybe you're confusing it with Jukkasjärvi where the Ice hotel is? :)
