Tourist Trap: Vendor rip-offs

  • Some girls in the group went to an ice-cream vendor, and asked the price for ice-cream. The vendor scooped a cone for each, gave them the ice-cream, and said "10 000 Lira" (It was in the days before the Euro). That's the equivalent of around $8-$10 Canadian - for a frigin' ice cream cone! He wouldn't lower the price, and so they had to each pay 10 000 Lira.

At Least Do This: If you can haggle the price, do it. If you can't be aware that you might get ripped off if you're dealing with a street vendor.
Alternative: Don't even approach a vendor if you don't want to buy what they have.

Tourist Trap: The gladiators at the Coliseum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

  • At the Coliseum, you'll see some local men dressed up as gladiators. They'll tell you to take a picture, but often won't tell you to pay until after you've taken the picture. I don't know how much in Euros, but when I was there it was usually 1000 Lira per picture. Sometimes they'll just pose for you, other times they'll do silly things for the camera - make you wear their gladiator hat or pretend to chop your head off with their sword.

At Least Do This: If you see these gladiators and want to take a picture, be aware that you'll have to pay them.
Alternative: Just ignore them and don't take a picture!

    Tourist Trap: Validating tickets

  • If you're taking a train or bus, you have to have your ticket stamped/validated. For trains, the stamping machines are bright yellow and on the platforms at the station. On buses, the machines are on the bus itself. Just slip in your ticket and it gets stamped automatically. It's not difficult and if you don't do this, you'll have to pay a fine if your ticket gets checked.

I'll be doing the same trekking as you for a couple of days but just not in strappy sandals. ;) Did you feel okay travelling on your own in Rome?

There's a plus...you block the tap with your finger and the water goes upwards through a hole on the pipe....
