The Vatican is an absolute must-see for anyone going to Rome! Even for the non-religious, it's an absolutely beautiful place. St. Peter's Basilica is the biggest church in the world, and definitely one of the most gorgeous in my opinion. St. Peter's tomb is underneath it. Michaelangelo's statue La Pieta is also in the church. Also, even though we didn't do this, you can walk up to the top of the dome in the basilica. There is also an elevator to get to the top. Also, the famous Sistine Chapel. The paintings in it are gorgeous. It's nice to just stand there, look around, and let it all soak in. Remember to not take flash pictures. The flash damages the paint, and you don't want these paintings to be destroyed!

This is a gorgeous fountain with all sorts of carvings and statues in it. Legend has it that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, you'll go back to Rome someday. It's just superstition, but it's kinda cool nonetheless. My Italian friend told me that every year, someone gets arrested for trying to swim in the fountain.

What remains of the Colosseum today is only a fraction of what it was back in the olden days, when crowds gathered to watch gladiators and wild animals fight inside it. It is a major historical monument in Roman history, and an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Rome. The walls and spectator stands are all stone, with many entrances and arcs, much like a Spanish bullring. There is also a maze inside it. You'll probably see some local men dressed as gladiators posing for pictures outside the Coliseum. If you do take a picture, you have to pay them, when I was there it was usually 1000 Lira per picture.

The Catacombs are an underground maze. In the olden days, the Christians used them to hide from the Romans who were persecuting them. There are also the tombs of martyrs, such as St. Cecilia. They're like a damp cave, and there are paintings on the walls of the maze. You can't take pictures though, the flash damages the paint. Also, NEVER wander off, ALWAYS stay with the tour guide. It's very easy to get lost in the maze, and I've been told that it can be impossible to be found again because the maze is so complex.

There are many Catholic basilicas and cathedrals in Rome, and St. Paul's is one of the most beautiful. Definitely a must-see no matter what your religious beliefs are, because even if you're not Catholic, you'll love the architecture, and the interior of the basilica is so beautiful. It's also huge - during World Youth Day, it was one of the catechesis sites, and several hundred pilgrims could fit inside!

The Spanish Steps are an outdoor stone staircase in Rome, near the Spanish Embassy. They're surrounded by beautiful old buildings. The Spanish Steps are a major tourist attraction and often used as a meeting point for both locals and tourists.

Aside from the Coliseum, there are a lot of ruins of old buildings dating back from Ceasar's day (and many even older than that). They're close together, within walking distance of each other. If you love ancient history, you'll love these ruins.

Across the river and south of the Vatican, is the charming little district of Trastevere. It's definitely worth a visit, especially if you're tired of the tourist-filled attractions in downtown Rome. Trastevere has a lot of narrow, cobblestone streets, little shops and restaurants, and beautiful statues and fountains. There is also a beautiful church - Santa Maria in Trastevere. It's not very crowded and there are barely any tourists there. It's nice to spend an afternoon there to explore the neighbourhood, and have a drink in one of the bars there in the evening.

This is one of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen. A huge basilica within walking distance of the Termini station, with all sorts of beautiful statues and carvings.

This is a large public square and even at night it's still alive. It is a large cobblestone piazza with fountains and statues, and there are locals and tourists, lots of street vendors, buskers, etc. Most of the vendors are selling counterfeit handbags and crap, but the buskers are fun to watch.
