"Nice is Nice," Nice by etfromnc

This fifth largest city in France, with a population of about 350,000, has two very distinct areas: Old Town (Vieille Ville or Vieux Nice) and the New Town. They combine to form a large cosmopolitan city which consists of a large, modern city wrapped around a throwback to medieval times. The Vieille Ville is characterized by maze-like streets, many shops and stalls, singing and dancing troubadours, and a more relaxed pace than the New Town, which is characterized by fast paced busy people seemingly very self-absorbed.
Nice has been a very highly regarded beach resort for two centuries. The primary vehicular and pedestrian thoroughfare through Nice is the Promenade des Anglais which runs about 5 km along the shoreline.
Nice and Cannes may probably be considered as the cornerstones of the French Riviera but, from my brief visits, I would characterize Cannes as Fantasyland and Nice as much more a place of the common people.
