Getting TO/AROUND: The Underground or Tube is the fastest way to get around London though sometimes it gets too crowded.
London consists of 6 zones. Zone 1 is Central London where business and schools are located. The more zones you intend to travel around, the more expensive the travelcard (tube ticket) is more likely to be.
You can use the tube ticket for buses also.
Just show your ticket to the bus driver as you get on.

If you're new at using tubes, it might be a bit confusing. There are several lines operating towards different directions. One line can operate in two directions but with different trains. For example, if you're catching one line, make sure what the last destination is. So you can know which direction it would go via. Please view the tube map here to see the tube lines.

    Prices: (estimated)
    - Single-way ticket: BP2.00 (zone 1)
    - One-day ticket: BP4.70 (zone 1 & 2)
    - One-week ticket: BP22.80 (zone 1)

If you are student, you must ask your college to provide a letter to get students discount on travelcards.
Personally, it's cheaper to pay for a slightly expensive accommodation in Central London rather than to live in Zone 3 or 4 where accommodation is cheaper while traveling to Central London is very costy. Some students think otherwise.

    you calculate it anyway!

    Walking in London: Just walk!

Getting TO/AROUND: If you're not used to walking for long distances, you'd feel driven to walk in hurry, just to walk with the flow; amazing!

When you want to cross street, you'd always see this sign 'Look Right' or 'Look Left' indicating where the traffic would come from. At the beginning, I didn't know what the means so I just look as it was written until a friend told me what, lol.

There is also 'WAIT' service at each traffic light. Press the button so the traffic light would turn red and cars would stop. Once I thought, this is a *** and it's only psychology to make us patient. So I didn't press any button and cars never stopped. So do press the WAIT button to cross streets and the green light would allow you to walk.

Be ready to walk for one hour or so. Sometimes transportation is really expensive and walking is the most economic way to get around. One my colleagues and I walked for two hours on a day-trip. So have a map of London's roads, shake your feet and go:^)

Airports (travel to and from): from Heathrow airport to Central London

Getting TO/AROUND: The cheapest way to get from Heathrow to Central London is to take the tube. It will take around 1-2 hours as maximum.
London is divided into 6 travel zones. Heathrow is located in zone 6 and Central London in zone 1. One-day ticket (1-6 zones) is around BP6 off peak up to BP12 on peak.

Take the Piccadily Line (dark blue line on the tupe map)toward Cockfosters.
Be aware: the Piccadily Line will be split in two lines; one toward Cockfosters and the other toward Uxbridge. This line serves Terminal 1, 2, and 3.

The tube is cozy for those who are single and have light luggage only. There will be lots of stairs and lifts are not available in every tube station.

Taxis: the Black Taxi of London

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are absolutely hilariously expensive in London. A fifteen-minute ride may cost you £10 or more depending on traffic. When I lived in Central London, wanted to give myself a treat so I took a taxi from Heathrow to Angel and that was only 45-minute journey. It costed me around £67. Luckily there was no much traffic as the price could have been much higher!

They are handy if there are no buses or tubes running for any technical or maintenance problems, and when it's raining of course! actually i like them because they're quite spacious and cozy and disability-friendly too.

I should admit that black taxis are to be an English heritage, specially made for commuting within London. That's something;^) Sometimes I get annoyed when i see all these taxis full and covered by commercial ads that make them look blue, pink or tropical. I just don't like them to be that fake! Go black, go original, i'd prefer it pretty much. Surprisingly, i've never taken a serious photo of taxis! apart from the random taxis appearing in my photos!

Getting TO/AROUND: after living in london for nearly 20 months and a few frequent visits afterward, 2 years in total, i learnt about this Mini Cab companies!

they driver you anywhere in london at a fixed rate regardless of the traffic jam, and they are safe, cheaper than the black cab, and are just one call away.

i wanted to catch the bus then the tube to heathrow from abbey road, at 5:00 in the morning. my friend told it wouldn't be that safe to risk dragging a suitcase that late. so she recommended to call a mini cab.
    a mini cab?
yes, it's not expensive, safe, and pretty practical.

so here we go; i was sent a black mercedes, with a handsome driver - all in the package:D and it took me only 40 minutes to get to heathrow the airport from where i was, at £24 only. i saved money, time and didn't bother about safety issues

so if in hassle, call a mini cab

Great post. Travelling from Heathrow is very difficult and tiring using any other form of tranport. I tied using http://www.homeremovalservices.com for a airport transfer and it took us ages to get across.
