  • The obvious icon of ancient Rome. A marvellous ruin with a stunning history and a huge impact on the appearance of the city. Always lots of tourists, but waiting lines aren't that long. The Colosseum itself is big enough to absorb the hords.
Tip: Amusing to watch the 'gladiators' outside, wearing plastic helmets and smoking cigarettes. They are only after your money if you want to take a picture of them.

  • The square and the Cathedral of St.Peter are of an immense size and therefor capable of accomodating thousands of tourists. Waiting lines (for security scans) for entering the St.Peter disappear rapidly.
Visiting the Vatican musea is a somewhat different story. Despite being huge as well, waiting lines can be rather long. Crowds continue inside, particularly when approaching the Sistine Chapel. If you take your time (at least half a day for St.Peter cathedral, square, crypt, cupola) and at least a day for the Vatican musea, you can see an amount of art you can see nowhere else.

  • Completed almost 1900 years ago and still intact. That, together with the revolutionary dome construction, the huge size and the mystic atmosphere make the Pantheon one of my personal favourites in Rome. The size alone is impressive (a 43.3 meter sphere would fit exactly) but the light falling through the oculus (hole in the top) makes this temple uncomparable. There are drainage holes in the floor in case it rains....

  • A bit confusing perhaps, but the name of the park is Villa Borghese and the name of the villa is Galleria Borghese. This Galleria Borghese is perhaps one of the most beautiful musea of Italy or even Europe. It isn't very big (only 300 visitors at the time, in 2 hour shifts, so you usually need to make a reservation in advance!), but it accomodates some of the world's most beautiful sculptures. Separated only a few yards from eachother you can see the erotic Paulina Borghese Bonaparte (by Canova), Apollo & Daphne, David, Pluto & Persephone (all by Bernini, 1620-'25 era). Upstairs is the Pinacoteca, with an abundant painting exhibition (Rafael, Rubens, Titian, Del Sarto, Caravaggio).
Make sure to leave some time to stroll through the park and lay in the grass.

  • Benedict XVI on his balcony.

  • It seems that Benedict XVI continues the tradition of his predecessor. John Paul II made his appearance on his balcony every Sunday at noon. On the first possible occasion (Sunday noon, May 1st, 2005) the new pope as well gave his blessings to the people gathered on the square.

    Trevi Fountain: Trevi fountain

  • The Trevi fountain is actually a facade of a building and the fountain is so enormous that it fills almost the entire square, leaving only a street. First throw a coin over your shoulder and make a wish (there is only one wish to make actually: to return to Rome someday) and second get yourself a San Crispino ice-cream around the corner (Via della Panetteria) and eat it at the steps of the Trevi fountain. Life can be so beautiful....
