Authenticity and beaches

Many of the humanly built historic sites in the USA consist of reconstructed buildings made to look like when history was being made. Some have been moved (like the Alamo in San Antonio) and others are so engulfed by urban construction that it is hard to imagine what they were really like. Another (Williamsburg) was turned into a theme park type place with a large Visitor's Center and high priced entrance tickets as if the place was the Epcot Center.
Beware that places like "western ghost towns" available to tourists may be in the real location but generally will only have as much authenticity as added by scholars.

The exception to this rule of fake authenciity is St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. By fortune, many of the original and otherwise historic buildings remain. Furthermore, geography has kept these buildings from being overwhelmed by city growth. It is a tourist destination with fine beaches, fishing, surfing, jet skis, lots of museums and special activities, plus a great collection of fine restaurants.
