What did I learn on a very brief visit to Buenos Aires? 1) Tango includes a body of music with hundreds of songs. You have to go beyond the most famous. 2) To speak like an Argentine, use an Italian rhythm and music and learn some very special vocabulary. (And yes, there are Argentine professionals who speak beautiful Spanish without an accent.) 3) Even in Argentina, you can recognize a Brazilian party. 4) The Argentine beef, is actually better than Texan beef. 5) When my wife says do not buy me any suede (or any other thing), I can ignore her and live to enjoy her gratitude. 6) Boca is more than a soccer team. (see travelogue) 7) I could actually enjoy a tour --the trip to a ranch (called a estancia) was actually a fun day with an international crowd. The Latinos especially appreciated that I knew words to some of the Hispanic oldies but goodies. By the end of the day, they were too polite or drunk to complain about my singing voice. 8) If you are not willing to change your sleep schedule, you may really miss a big part of the experience. (I knew this before, but in BA I learned to be sure to add "sleep" to the "speak like a native, eat like a native, move like a native" mantra that I try to follow. 9) Once you have been to Buenos Aires, you have to return to visit Argentina. |
