Crater Lake National Park Travel Guide: 148 reviews and 437 photos

Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon in the Cascade Mountain range, 160 km inland from the Pacific Ocean. Crater lake was born 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama had a blasting eruption that blow out the summit and left instead a volcanic basin named a caldera that further on filled with water. The surface of the water is at an elevation of 1,883 meters while Mount Mazema stood at 3,660 meters! The missing elevation has been blown out, which makes an enormous amount. The lake is 594 meters deep, which makes it the deepest in the United States and the seventh deepest lake in the world after the Baïkal (1,680 m). However, it might well be the deepest crater lake in the world.

The eruption of Mount Mazema was enormous and more than 42 times more powerful than the eruption of neighboring Mount St Helen in 1980. The amount of ashes that remained in the stratosphere for several years was so great the temperature of the entire world was lowered by several degrees.

How fascinating and informative. I cannot believe how stunning and blue the water is. This part of country that so many do not take the time to search out and truly enjoy. Its been educational, thank you!

Thanks for explaining why Crater Lake is so clean and why a pumice desert is not an actual desert. I wonder when the next huge volcano is going to erupt -- huge enough to cool the atmosphere for several years like this one did.
