Korcë is one of the 12 prefectures of Albania. It is the main city of souteastern Albania, 109 km southeast of Tiranë, 19 km from the border with Greece. It is also named Korça, Korce, Korcha, Korytsa (Greek) and Corizza (Italian). In 2009, it had a population of 58 800 and was the 6th most populated city of the country.

Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral

At an elevation of 850 m, it stands in the middle of a rich agricultural plain (corn), framed by the Morava mountains.

The region has been inhabited since the Vth century BC (Neolithic). A city named Coviza was already mentioned in documents from 1280. The Ottoman occupation began in 1440 and lasted until WWI.

In the 19th century it became a main centre of the Albanian national consciousness. In 1887 was established the first school (for boys) teaching in Albanian, and 1891 the first Albanian school for girls. During the Balkan Wars, Greece occupied Korcë (1912-1913). From 1916 to 1920, the French administered it as the autonomous republic of Korça. At that time, Korcë was the most populated city of Albania. A French Lycée was opened in 1917 and closed in 1939 when the Italians invaded the country.

Hahaha, I laughed so much when I read your first to-do tip :-) So that would be my town, given the perfect low Ca DHMO supply :-) Voskopojë looks gorgeous, the little church and in general. And Restaurant Antonetta... yummm.. I get hungry! Laughed also about the dog conference. What might they have exchanged as information? Where the get the best food? Oh and the market photos.... these cheese filled peperoni (peppers?) look very delicious!

Jean-Louis, fabulous page with outstanding photos of this south-eastern gem of Albania. Our two trips to Albania, included only places in the north-westeren regions, but we are all prepared for the rest of the country. I didn't know that the Mountain-Tea is not only famous in Macedonia but also in Albania. We really enjoyed it in Macedonia.

Hello Jean-Louis, I'm glad to see that you have started making VT pages again. I was impressed by the “salt crystal house” that looks like salt when it crystallizes. It's funny that there is also a university called Kristal in the same town.

Interesting page, Jean-Louis!Really amazing crystal like architecture as well as a Franco-Albanian conference at ground level! Hope a Franco-Russian conference with our German shepherds will take place someday, haha!
