Dubrovnik Things to Do

Things To Do: Rest before the visit
  • Tip Rating:
  • When arriving in the afternoon, it is better to first find a hotel with a nice view, take advantage of the view, sip a glass of Dingac and leave the visit of the city for early morning.
On the left the peaceful island of Locrum can be seen and on the right, the old city of Dubrovnik.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Ops, the glass is empty... Let us have a little walk around the hotel before dinner ! The sunset on the see can be gorgeous. The visit of the whole old city of Dubrovnik can be a kind of treck ! Then, better be in good condition to morrow !

Things To Do: The town from the South
  • Tip Rating:
  • This picture shows the general view on the old city of Dubrovnik seen from the South. On the right, the ancient harbor (Stara luka) is nested in the fortifications. On this view, Dubrovnik is very impressive and seems to be impregnable, which it actually was. Nearly !

City walls: On top of the city walls
  • Tip Rating:
  • The round trip on the city walls is a must do for everybody. You should do it as early as possible in the morning in order to avoid the peak of heat and moreover the crowd. I feel that on a sunny winter morning, the sight should be even more magnificent !

    City walls: Tiled roofs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most of the roofs have kept their ''Roman tiles'' (sometimes called ''half-boot''), very heavy and not very waterproof. But even those, which have been covered with modern mechanical tiles, keep a beautiful look because the color is the same.

Very narrow streets allow protecting from the heat in summer, from the wind in winter.

    The Stradun: The Stradun
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only wide street in the old town is the Stradun (the placa). It runs from east to west across the core of the old town. A long time ago, it was a shallow strait of water between the continent and the island of Dubrovnik. When, beginning in the 11th century, it was fill to unit both sides that gave this open space, free of any building.

City walls: A sea of tiles
  • Tip Rating:
  • This ocean of tiled roofs is a landscape in itself. This landscape is one of the beauties of the old town. It is different following where you are looking from; From the upper road, it is different from what you see from the city wall.

Minceta Fortress: The Minceta fortress and the sea
  • Tip Rating:
  • The sea is in the background, behind the Minceta fortress (Tverdava Minceta). It is better to be there when there are not too many tourists. When the city wall is almost desert, it enhances the feeling of strength produced by the strong walls. A crowd destroys that feeling !

Minceta Fortress: Close up to the Minceta fortress
  • Tip Rating:
  • The huge Minceta fortress was strengthened and made higher in the 15th century, following the plans of the architect Juraj Dalmatinaca (Juraj the Dalmat). Its terrace is the highest point of the old town and gives a magnicent landscape.
