"Počitelj, a village that deserves a visit" Pocitelj by JLBG
Pocitelj Travel Guide: 15 reviews and 44 photos
Počitelj a small city in the south western part of Bosmia Herzegovina lies on a hillside that makes a kind of amphitheater and overhangs the Neretva river. It is on the road from Mostar to the Adriatic coast.
It has a long history and was first mentioned in 1444. Its special Ottoman architecture makes it a jewel and has been inscribed in 2007 on the Unesco World Heritage Tentative List.
It was inhabited by a mixed community, mainly Moslem and suffered extensive damages during the 1992-96 wars. It has now been almost entirely rebuilt in its previous condition.
We had a long journey scheduled and had no time to walk into the city for a visit. It obviously deserves a detailed visit and we plan to visit it thoroughly on the occasion of another travel in the area. Its architectural interest almost matches the old city of Mostar.
The origin of the name is unclear but might partly come from the Italian “cittadella” (for –čitelj). It would then be “the place with a citadel”

Another great page on medieval Poèitelj. Really enjoyed our trip to this beautiful village during our stay in Mostar. Thanks for sharing. Brian
it looks just lovely
Another excellent picture here: Počitelj
I agree Pocitelj is a jewel. When I visited last in 2006 it felt like a ghost town. I arrived midday around siesta time. No tourists in sight just my friends and I. But the silence at last was broken by a prayer from the local mosque. Such a serene place.
a great little page here Sir JL! such beautiful scenery in this part of the world. so glad that people can visit peacefully now!
An afternoon spent in this town was time well spent indeed. leyle
Lovely scenery and a pretty village - thanks for sharing :)
One of Bosnia's hidden charms. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
More wonderful scenery. Thanks for sharing.
Neretva sounds as a very Russian name of a river. Poèitelj fortress looks very attractive. Thanks Jean-Louis for the virtual tour!
