Caution : this is not a new page. I have tranfered here without any change my previous Durrës page, based on my 1988 travel. I have now built a new Durrës page, based on my May 2007 visit.

Durrës is the main harbor for Albania, only 39 km from the capital Tirana. It has close to 100,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city in Albania, after Tiranë.

Durrës

Epidamnus was founded around 625 BC by the Corcyreans, who were the ancient inhabitants of the island of Corfu and by the Corinthians from the Greek city of Corinth. The Romans seized the city in the 3rd century BC and changed the name to Dyrrhachium which became later Durr?s in Albanese and Durrazzo in Italian.

Always fascinating to have this peek into the old Albania!! You make very interesting observations regarding the TV antennae and children's playground! So that is what brought Communism down!
