  • The south of the city is lined by a series of fortifications that have been built by the Austrian in the 1833-1842 period. They are made of strong battlements protected by a wide ditch. Parts of the ditches have been turned into free parking lots which are within walking distance from the city center. • Porta Nuova is one of the several entrances into the city. It is at the same place than a late Renaissance entrance but was built in the middle of the XIXth century, together with the fortifications. The streets now pass on both sides of the entrance and no more underneath.

  • I Portoni della Brà, one of the gates of the old city are seen here from Corso Porta Nuova. On the other side of the gates are Piazza Brà, the Arena and the historical center of the city. I Portoni della Brà are two huge arches which make an opening in the city walls built in the XIVth century

  • Palazzo Barbieri stands on the eastern side of Piazza Brà, perpendicular to the Arena. It has been built in the XIXth century by the architect Giuseppe Barbieri in a neo-classical style. It has been since then the city hall.

  • Piazza Brà is paved with small sized granite cobblestone of various shade, from bluish grey to reddish grey and greenish grey, arranged to draw regular waves lined by a thin line of moss that grows between them, telling that Verona must have most of the time a relatively high level of air moisture.

  • The entrance to the Maffeiano museum is just behind i Portoni della Bra. It is a lapidary museum created by Scipione Maffei in 1714, hence the name. It prides itself to be the oldest lapidary museum in Europe. It has a very rich collection of mostly locally found stone engravings from various periods.

  • When we visited Verona, there was an exhibition and the whole Piazza was covered with booth that presented and sold local agricultural productions such as rice, olive oil, cheese, ham. On the other side, not shown here, there was also an exhibition of superb king size tractors ! Some can be seen on the Palazzo Barbieri photo.

  • The arena of Verone were built in the first century AD but have been modified and repaired several times along the centuries. Its builders used alternatively stones and bricks for most of its structure, bricks only for the top.

Arena: The arena, part of the outer wall

  • Most of the outer wall has been destroyed along the centuries and there remains only a small part of it. The good side of these destructions is that it allows better to see how the circulation of the spectators could work in a Roman's arena, exactly as if it was a pedagogical section done on purpose !
