Bœrsch (which can be written Boersch for those that cannot get the « oe » properly, with the « o » and the « e » linked) is named Börsch in Alsatian. It is a very small village of 2,100, on the Route des vins, between Obernai (4 km) and Rosheim, not far from Mutzig and Molsheim (11 km). It is 34 km from Strasbourg.
The full official name is Bœrsch-Saint-Léonard-Klingenthal as the community brings together the chief-town of Bœrsch with its two hamlets of Saint-Léonard and Klingenthal
Bœrsch is not touristy but however is worth a visit as it has a city wall (built in 1340) with three fortified gates, beautiful wine-growers’ houses and a delicious central square.
The site of Bœrsch was already inhabited 300 years ago but the first written mention of the name dates from 1109, when it was a property of Saint-Léonard Abbey. In 1340, it was granted the statute of city and thus could build city walls. Because of destructions during several wars, nowadays Bœrsch has few remains of the Middle ages period and the city is mostly Renaissance style. |

Nemorino Wed Apr 16, 2008 23:04 UTC I wonder when people stopped washing their clothes in that "lavoir" -- maybe in the 1940s, 50s or even 60s? I remember when my mother got her first (top-loading) washing machine -- I think I was around seven or eight years old at the time. | Bwana_Brown Mon Apr 14, 2008 18:18 UTC Beautiful photos of this well-preserved historic town with lots of interesting attractions! The "lavoir" and "six-bucket well" are particularly unique! | Kuznetsov_Sergey Fri Apr 4, 2008 14:31 UTC What a wonderful 900-years old village (older than Moscow)! Thanks Jean-Louis for showing it on your page. The Hôtel de Ville and three gates seem to be very attractive as well as the central square with a 6 buckets well. | JLBG Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:12 UTC Back a few minutes from working outside! You have made the big virtual tour of Alsace. Now, the real thing! i have a Colmar page to add tonight. I am not ready for an Alsace page, there are many places missing and I am not really keen on general p! Later! |
