Pigeons nesting in the holes - Rabat
Pigeons nesting in the holes

The Almohade city wall has been built with bricks of lightly cooked clay. Along the years, rain, sun, rain again, have carved (small) cracks between each brick. The pigeons have widened some of these cracks and now, this is where they are nesting.

Almohade city wall - Rabat
Almohade city wall

The Almohade city wall is the most beautiful part of the city walls, between Bab Er Rouah and Bab El Had. This part of the city walls has the same orientation than Bab El Had and is also better seen in late afternoon.

Bab El Had - Rabat
Bab El Had

Bab El Had is on Hassan II Avenue. "Bab" means doorway. "El Had" is the first and in this case the first day of the week, which is Sunday. Then Bab El Had is "Sunday entrance"
Bab El Had is oriented towards the west, and, thus is best seen at the end of the afternoon.

Out of the Oudaias

Hop under a vaulted passage ! - Rabat
Hop under a vaulted passage !

From time to time, you can as well find some covered vaulted passage. They are equally public passages where you can walk freely. There, you will never suffer from the heat, even at the very most of summer !

Back to a ''main'' street - Rabat
Back to a ''main'' street

Strolling along the smallest of the lanes is fine but you cannot walk always only in small passages, you have sometimes to go to the main streets. When there is no shops, they can be equally peaceful !

Wide enough ? - Rabat
Wide enough ?

The narrowest, the quietest ! As long as there is no door, you can walk wherever you like. Sometimes, we were not sure that we were not on a private space but actually, you have not to bother : if it is private, it is closed. If it is not closed, you can go, this is public !

White and blue ! - Rabat
White and blue !

It is a real pleasure to wander freely in these peaceful streets. Once you have left the main street, nobody will bother you, nobody will propose you to visit a shop or to go to the terrace from where there is a view. You are on your own !

Another world ! - Rabat
Another world !

Once inside of the casbah des Oudaïas it looks as if you were in another world. It is a white and blue world, so quiet after the busy boulevard with its traffic of trucks and cars and the reddish-brown color of the city wall.

Main entrance into the Casbah des Oudaïas - Rabat
Main entrance into the Casbah des Oudaïas

If you walk up, not far, just further to the entrance, you will arrive soon to the lane that lead to the 'Caravelle'' restaurant (look at my restaurants tip). This lane runs between high walls. On the left, the city wall of the casbah des Oudaïas and on the left, a second city wall that was built later to improve the protection of the Casbah.
