Evia is the largest island of the Egean and the second largest island of Greece after Crete. It is North East to Athens. It is 180 km long.
Evia (or better Évia) is named Eυβoια in Greek |
| | However, is Evia actually an island?
Evia is separated from the continent by the strait of Euripe. In front of the city of Chalcis (Halkida), the strait of Euripe is a narrow channel with an amazing feature: for still unexplained reasons (not the tide), the sea flows with a strong flow, alternatively in one way and the other 7 times a day. The legend says that Aristotle searched for an explanation, which he did not found and, from despair, jumped into the flow, where he died, drowned.
The strait is so narrow that, long ago, a bridge has been built and when you drive into Evvia, you do not realize that you are on an island! Once we passed the bridge, we drove to the south and Karistos. It is a dead end and we came back by the same road until Lepoura to go to Kimi, on the east coast. Kimi is another dead end! Back again to Lepoura to drive to Mandoudi, Artemissio and Loutra Edipsos, in the north. |

Aitana Wed Aug 12, 2009 22:45 UTC Another part of Greece I still haven't been (just virtually, following Herodotus). Schistolithos or plaka schistolithou might be the word for slate? Thanks for your tips. | volopolo Wed Aug 5, 2009 04:07 UTC You know Evia is very near to me, but i never been there! | deecat Sat Nov 22, 2008 03:39 UTC Another priceless place. Loved all the great photographs. I really enjoyed reading about Evia, especially camping in the wild, beehives, night fishing, sea urchins, phasme, and those wierd grasshoppers! | nickandchris Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:49 UTC Looks like we did a similar thing on Evia, although we didn't have our inflateable (Quicksilver) which we have now and use mainly in Scotland. We will return to Evia one day! |
