Foggâret-ez-Zoûa is an oasis and a village 50 km north east to In-Salah, coordinates: 27°22N 2°50E

Foggaret has nothing special. We wanted to go there because in the Sahara, villages standing close to a main trail are always more or less visited by travelers. We wanted to go to a place that had very few visitors. Foggaret had the advantage of not being too far from the surfaced road but at the same time of being outside any main route.

It seems that at one time a surfaced road departing from the road El-Goléa to In-Salah allowed to reach easily the village. However, a dozens of kilometer before Foggâret-ez-Zoûa, we found that the road disappeared under a large sand dune. It was not more than a dozen meters thick but we could not see if the road appeared at the other end of the dunes.

Then we followed the very sandy trail with our Peugeot 504 and reached easily the remote village. The first sight was on the sif of a dune crested with reeds, arranged to break the wind and stop sand from invading the village.

Foggaret ez Zoua has some really lovely people and such a fascinating culture. It's funny, people think Mojave is arid and desolate. At least the sand there has such a lovely orange hue to it. Nice page!

Fantastic colours and contrast in your pictures. Your tips offer interesting insight into living in the desert. Did you manage to communicate with the locals in any way?

Jean-Louis another intriguing page of yours. I can imagine the locals being afraid of a stranger as I'm sure they didn't get much visitors way back then. Also thanks for visiting my new Athens pages.

Your visit seems to have caused quite a stir in this very sandy and out-of-the-way village.

A priceless look into the reactions of locals when strangers 'invaded' their remote oasis 32 years ago!!
