Gori is a 60,000 inhabitants city of eastern Georgia, in Shida Karti province. It has a long history as it was founded in the Xith century by king David IV. However, the name of Gori evokes immediately the name of Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, aka Joseph Stalin who was born there in 1878. A museum reminds his life.
The fortress of Goristikhe stands high on top of a hill overlooking the city. It’s name, means Gori’s fortress.
In the neighbourhood, one must visit the troglodytic city of Uplistikhe (the fortress of Uppli) and the church of Ateni Sioni (pages to be built soon)
During the 2008 conflict (South Ossetian war), Gori was bombed and occupied by the Russian army for two weeks. In April 2011, during our short visit, we did not see anything that reminded that episode.

Jean-Louis, fantastic little page about Gori here. Interesting descriptions of the museum as well. The food of the Intourist restaurant doesn't look too bad at all.
Is it realy more than Stalin’s birthplace? L.
The Wounded Warrior Statue is awesome and sobering. The Stalin Museum sounds fascinating. Look forward to your Ateni Sioni pages. Excellent page here JL!
Those statues of the Wounded Warriors look really mysterious and impressive! I wonder what their story is. (I goggled “Wounded Warriors Gori” and was lead to your tip.) The Stalin Museum sounds interesting since it is still in the style of his time. I’m sure it would be difficult to create a modern museum about Stalin.
Hello Jean-Louis, thanks for your comment on my Brioni page, the place is indeed an interesting trip from peninsula. Great to read your Gori page. Everything breathe with old man, still... I long wanted to visit Georgia and still wish to do so.
