"A strong fortified complex" Gremi by JLBG

Gremi Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 18 photos

In the 16th century, Gremi was the capital of Kakheti. It was a large city spread in the plain and overhanged by the Archangel's Church complex standing on top off it’s rock. The armies of Shah Abbas from Persia (Iran) destroyed the city and nothing was left except the church complex.

Church of Archangels and Royal Tower was inscribed in 2007 on the Unesco World Heritage Tentative list. More on the description of Gremi Church

That’s an impressive stronghold up there on the rock. Good that they are making repairs in the traditional way.

This is a place I havn't been to in Georgia. Good they are repairing the church complex now before it falls into ruins. Sounds to be an interesting place to visit.
