In Eastern Georgia, in the Kakheti region, the Ikalto monastery stands near the eponymous village, 8 km north-west to Telavi in a deep valley of the Gombori mountains, nested amonf cypresses.

In VT location database, it is spelt Iqalt’o, which is very unusual. Google gives 2 480 answers for Iqalt’o, 62 8000 for Iqalto and 142 000 for Ikalto. I will use here the usual spelling of Ikalto, locally used in the transcripts.

The monastery was founded in the Vith century by Zenon, one of 13 the Syrian fathers that christened Georgia. There are three churches in the premises of Ikalto monastery : Khvtaeba, Kvelatsminda and Sameba but Ikalto is best known from its Academy. It was under king David the Builder, at the beginning of the XIIth century that a monk named Arsen, founded the famous Ikalto Academy. It lasted until 1616, when the armies of Shah Abbas from Persia
