"Dzveli and Akhali Shuamta" Shuamta by JLBG

In the neighborhood of Telavi, the monasteries of Dzveli Shuamta and Akhali Shuamta are a must see. Shuamta (or Shuamt’a, or Chuamta) means “between mountains”.

The monastery of Dzveli Shuamta (old Shuamta) is actually a set of three churches built one after the other between the Vth and the VIIIth century. There does not remain anything from the monks dwellings. It was abandoned by the monks in the XVIth.

The monastery of Akhali Shuamta (new Shuamta) was built in the XVIth by Tinatin Gurieli, the wife of King Levan II as a women monastery. She herself took the veil in the monastery she founded. It is still working as a monastery.

Note : this page should be under
Middle East » Georgia » Kakheti » Shuamta but that destination does not exist on Vt; I will ask to have it created but in the mean time, I have dropped my page under
Middle East » Georgia » Abkhasia » Shuamta, 200 km away

Yes, on such a foggy day it does look like you might find Sleeping Beauty’s castle or Bluebeard’s mansion behind that gate. The black stains on the inside walls make these churches look even older than they really are.

Incredible! The VIth-VIIth dome churches in such a small village… I’ve never heard about Georgian Shamta and Abkhasian Shamta. It’s bad you had a problem where to put your page. But it’s too bad that relationships between Georgia and Abkhasia are so spoiled.

What an extraordinary place - as you say, the mist and the quiet must have made it very atmospheric. Merry Christmas - leyle
