Telavi is a city of 25 000 inhabitants, standing in the Alazani river valley, at the feet of he Dagestan mountains. It is at an elevation of 500 meters. It is the largest city of Kakheti, in Eastern Georgia.

The name of the city might come from ?tela?, meaning ?elm? as there are many growing in the area. It is one of the oldest towns of eastern Georgia. It was mentioned as a town named ?Telada? by the Greek geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD but it had been inhabited long before, most probably since the Bronze Age. In the Xth century, the Arabian geographer Al Mukadas mentioned that Telada was as large as Tbilisi.

I?m sure I have looked at these tips before, but my comment seems to have disappeared. Nice page, in any case.

A very nice trip, Jean-Louis! There was a Soviet film where was a joke on misunderstanding Telavi ? Tel Aviv, haha! It?s a pity the weather was bad and the landscape on the city of Telavi was hidden by clouds?
