Rosheim, many remains of the 12th century

by JLBG - last update: Mar 25, 2008

Église Saint Pierre et Paul
Rosheim is a city of 5,000 standing 7 km north to Obernai and 25 km west to Strasbourg.

The site was already inhabited in the Neolithic but the city was first mentionned in 778 under the name of Rodashaim. In 1262, it was granted the statute of city and hence the right to build a city wall. Rosheim became an imperial city in 1303. In 1554, Rosheim built with nine other cities of Alsace, the « Décapole » which was an Alliance between these cities. Rosheim then expanded itself and built a second city wall.

Rosheim is considered to have one of the largest set of 12th and 13th buildings in Alsace.

What a fascinating town with all its ancient architecture! Loved La Maison Romane, the church with its numerous statues, the well and the city gates. Thanks for pointing out the details to us. I wonder how you add those arrows to your photos.

What marvelous architecture! Fascinating to see up close the features of the buildings. Thanks for defining "acroteres". I love learning. Smiling about the 400-year-old bakery!

I would like this town to visit. Love walled towns. The Old Bakery and the Eglise St. Pierre & Paul look wonderful.
