  • Only in France.

You have made the effort to come here. Perhaps its the weekend or a public holiday and you are eager to make the best of your time. This is their business.

Where is the Tourist Office? Can I get some maps? Some leaflets and suggestions? Book a room?

No. Off to a two hour lunch break, and closed on holidays.

Know any restaurants that close for lunch? Churches that shut on Sundays? France, lovely that it is, sometimes needs a kick up its beautiful derriere!

  • Port Vauban welcomes visitors from all over Europe with this multilingual welcome.

Each language is scrupulously translated and begins in French, Italian and German with the welcoming words "Dear Tourists"... except the English version where, conspicuous in their absence, the welcoming words have been dropped.

The French just couldn't bring themselves to say "Dear tourists" to the Anglo-Saxons.

The large blank space in the layout of the text suggests the welcome may have been there originally, but more recently removed as a sign of disapproval of something British or American.

The French love to make such symbolic gestures. Do we look bothered? We got the Olympics.

I could force myself to live in that vacant villa of 10 acres. Even the wood paneling could be tolerated, if I could keep the drapes and windows open:):) Great pages, as usual.

That's hilarious! I work on a yacht in PV and had noticed that myself.....I guess these small things make them happy!!

such a pleasure to revisit Antibes after many years with your images and (very) insightful commentary. Coming from the US, our pizza on the main square was at the time a revelation - never forget it. And the Picasso's. Thanks for sharing. N.
