Restaurant Name: Cafe des Chineurs
What we have been looking for a long time here in Antibes. French quality, cooking with fresh ingredients bursting with taste and flavour - at reasonable prices. Patronised mainly by French visitors and locals. The tourists are thankfully drawn to the obvious spots around the corner.
Favorite Dish: Omlette complet believe it or not is sensational. I am told by my better half the reason for its rich satisfying taste is that it has been cooked in lard, animal fat, or some other forbidden substance the nanny health nazis have banned as its bad for you. Well it tastes great, and that's good enough for me.
If the omlettes' off, the spaghetti with mushrooms is another suprising winner, bursting with creme sauce with a smoky flavour and mushroom cooked in lard (see above).
Seared salmon with freshly made real tartar sauce, fabulous.
Tarte tatin to die for.
Wine reasonably priced in pichets.
Great atmosphere good unhurried service. I continue to go back, as it "rings my bell and floats my boat" - as good analogy as you will get for Antibes.
(When some "foodies" on a travel site recently asked for the "best five restaurants in Antibes" I threw this one in, and was immediately rebuffed. "Never found anything on the menu I fancied" "Me too just didnt offer anything that appealed..." Point Bacon came up as a winner - around five times the cost of Le Chineurs. You pays your money and make your choices.)
UPDATE: July 2009
Les Chineurs has undergone a makeover, neutral and grey colour theme, more modern, and the menu seems to have changed, perhaps new management? Reserve judgement until tested the current offering.
