In a stark contrast to the usual "Sex and Drugs" vibe one gets in Amsterdam, one of the must see places is the Anne Frank House. You retrace the steps that Anne and her family took, while hiding from the Nazi's in WWII. It is somewhat empty, but visually arresting, with some of Anne's personal artifacts still posted on the walls. You hear the stories from the family members as you walk through the house, and hear the stories in the order of when they happened. After a day of gawking at canals and prostitutes, it is quite the emotional stomach-punch.

When you get off the main streets and start to wander, Amsterdam starts to look and feel like an entirely different city. Gone are the throngs of tourist, partiers, and gawkers and instead you start to see more locals and more adventurous tourists. It’s quite calming. The Anne Frank House area is great for this. After an emotionally draining visit to the House, you can just start to wander and reflect. The canals are calm and almost empty, with tree lined banks and houseboats along the edges. Many of the houses have wide open windows and you can look right inside.

Directions: Amsterdam is full of canals. Get a good map and ask around for advice. The Jordaan area is good for wandering.
