Antwerp: The land of...um, what is it the land of?

An Underrated Gem

Brabo fountain, Grote Markt
So, I was going to meet the wife in Antwerp. (I never thought I'd write that sentence!) Anyway, long story short, wifey was on a month long "Grand Tour" of Europe on business. I decided to fly out for the last 5 days of the trip, and cruise around in Belgium and Amsterdam. Antwerp was going to basically be the place where we left our suitcases while we spent the day exploring. I actually found it quite charming, and almost exactly what I was looking for: an old, historic city, without the crush of tourists you find in most old, historic cities. Any town with a cobblstone, pedestrian-only center is fine with me, and Antwerp had the perfect combination of old, plus vibrant.
We stayed in the Hilton, on the Groenplaats and walked wherever we needed to go. We were around the corner from the "mini-grand place"...the grote markt, and next to the giant cathedral that you can see for miles.

I think it must be one of the best located hotels and it is indeed beautiful because it is in such a unique building. Have you managed to visit other churches? Some of them contain a lot of paintings of great artists like Rubens; Van Dyck; Teniers...

I like your intro...and the Hilton is the perfect hotel on a great location to 'banjer' the area. :-)
