"China: Avoiding the millennium" Beijing by GillianMcLaughlin
Beijing Travel Guide: 6,188 reviews and 15,387 photos
Beijing was my base for a week or so around the Christmas / New Year period. I was very comfortably put up by a great Irish friend who was studying Cinese there. It was wonderful to have such an easy way to acclimatise myself to China before heading off on my own.
We visited the whole city, had an outing to Shian to see the terracota warriors, did some shopping in the "fake" markets, saw in the millennium in Tiananmen Square, and watch a watery sunrise on the Great wall on January 1st 2000.
These pages will build as I slowly get more photos scanned and check up on the details of everything. In the meantime enjoy with me some of the highlights of the Peking Opera. Apologies in advance for this rather wry journey through the show! Like all high art, western opera included, the audience plays along with the "hidden" characters and the overstated gestures!

The opera seems fun
never got to the opera myself, but i'm glad you did
G'day Gillian. How fascinating. Love those Opera pix matey! Cheers, Ann :o)
I have heard there are alot of Chinese people in China but that could be just a urban legend of sorts. I always play nicely with others unless they are not nice. I have a basement for that issue. Hugs

What a way to bring in the millennium, sure beats mine! The opera was one of the few things I didn't get round to in Beijing - wish I had now, it looks like fun!

Your travelogue proves my point - Peking Duck has NO duck in it! Great fun. Wished I'd taken the time to see a show like this. Cheers.
Thanks for visiting my Beijing page. I just got back from a short trip there last week, it's crazy how some things have changed in only a year. I will update my page when I have time and will put more pictures.Too bad you didn't stay long in 2000.
