OTJITOTONGWE CHEETAH FARM: Who says camping equals slumming it?

  • During out 6-day safari we stayed in a range of wonderful places, none more so that the campsite at the Otjitotongwe Cheetah farm. They had 9 camping spaces, clean shared ablution facilities, a bar with darts and pool equipment if you were bored by the stories of the cheetahs (unlikely), and very friendly hosts. Campers can use the braii for cooking.

Unique Qualities: The greatest thing abot this location was the splash pool which campers could use! Just look at it would you?

There was also a tree platform which can be climed to get a wonderful view all the way to the mountains. Otjitotongwe also has lodges which can be booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis (no self catering - they are traditional thatched lodgings and an accidental fire would be disasterous!).

For other activities please see stories and pictures in the "must see activities!

Windhoek Country Club Resort: Luscious green luxury in the middle of the desert

  • My friend’s cousin who lives in Cape Town works for a small chain of exclusive hotels. She managed to get us a deal on their hotel in Windhoek for our first night at the modest cost of around US$ 30 for the night. We turned up and found ourselves in the lap of luxury, the likes of which I had never experienced in my life.

I couldn't say that this is the hotel I would have sought out for myself, but for the price we paid, even I could put up with a bit of pampering!

Unique Qualities: The Windhoek Country Club is a green oasis that has sprouted in the scrubland on the outskirts of the town. It offers everything for the discerning traveller: very comfortable rooms which open directly onto the Flintstone-like pool area (see photo), an amazing restaurant offering an outstanding hot buffet (including a do-it-yourself stir-fry cooked fresh), extremely polite and welcoming staff, golf course, putting green, bowling green, 2 floodlit tennis courts, swimming pool… there’s even a casino!

The hotel runs a shuttle service into Windhoek

Chameleon Guest House: Wonderful lodgings with a tame meerkat thrown in!

  • The Chameleon Guest House is a wonderful experience. It caters for a range of comfort levels, from simple dorm accommodation to a honeymoon suite, and all of it served with a generous helping of true Namibian courtesy. As the Guest house also acts as mission control for Chameleon Safari, it can be quite a bustling place at times. The whole operation is run by Jackie, who is advised and distracted by her very important partner, Scratchy the meerkat!

Unique Qualities: The complex offers everything from en-suite facilities to quads, and the rates include breakfast and also linen in the rooms. There is a swimming pool, a bar area, internet facilities, left luggage and also a safe. The atmosphere is second to none, and is complemented by some great insider information and advice for travelers. The Chameleon team were incredibly responsive to our requests for information, even before we arrived. I cant recommend them highly enough.

Gillian, couple of questions, Ive been to Kenya, stayed at the Governor's Camp, and a safari drives every day. Want something different but no mini-bus. Really want to see meerkats in wild. Where can I see them? Which hotel do I base out of?
