"17 hours in Budapest: so little time, so much city" Budapest by GillianMcLaughlin
Budapest Travel Guide: 8,927 reviews and 16,365 photos
What more is there to be said about a city that has been immortalised in word and picture for so many centuries? A city divided by one of the most romantic rivers in the world. A city I have wanted to visit since I was a child? A city that is superbly presented already on this website and in travel guides galore?
I feel, not for the first time in my life, humbled before a mammoth task: magnified further because the occasion of my first visit was work-related and very short. I had in fact no more than a few hours to discover what I could, see what I might and photograph what would not result in a waterlogged camera. Yes, the rain was there to greet me too!
I arrived with friends an colleagues under cover of darkness following a conference in Szeged. We had time to dump our bags in the hotel and have a night time walk around the city centre. And, of course, a beer or two. I got up early the next morning to follow the same walk round the city and take some photos. It was a dull, rainy morning but I managed to take a few. Then a local friend arrived and the city was brought to life with her tales and explanations. Before taking the airport minibus, I again had some time alone. I ate a light lunch and, just as I was heading back to the hotel.. you’ve guessed it, the sun came out.
These pages contain the product of my peregrinations. So please be indulgent, be patient. What is contained in these pages can merely graze the surface of a city that I feel would take years to understand fully.
STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION
- Pros:Inspiring, walkable, clean, fascinating
- Cons:Emmm... Ummmm... Need to go back and find out
- In a nutshell:A city to return to time and time again

I love that opening photo. The more I read the more I realize I have made the right choice for this years trip.
Hi Gillian How can you spend so little time there, yet take such wonderful photos!!!
wish i'd had that book. great tip
Hi Gillian, looks like I'm also going to make it to Budapest this December. Thanks for the book tip... I heard a lot of complaints on the car drivers -- do you have to be careful as a wheel-based pedestrian?
Another lovely page. Great hotel tips. For when I get to Budapest.
Just considering a short break in Budapest Gillian! Good hotel tip, thanks :))
Old Cliffie was there for 30 hours - nanana...!!!
Small but nice!!!Great starting Picture!!!
I would have stayed in the hotel you recommended if I'd had the info. But yes I did go and the hotel I stayed in was convenient on a tram and bus line! Thanks! Greg
Beautiful photos! I hope to spend a little longer in Budapest than you did one day.
