New old world | view from the hotel to the beach |
Since I have been little I always dreamed of traveling to countries which are far away from my homecountry. In 1992 my family and me we finally flew to Cuba. I was sooo excited to leave Europe for the first time in my life (I have been 14 back then!). Back in 1992 only Cubana Air was allowed to fly into Cuba, so we flew from Vienna - New Foundland (Canada) - Varadero - Havanna, and finally 15 hours later we arrived Santa Maria del Mar, north of Havana. For me it was a paradies. I loved the language, the friendly people, the wonderful landscape and the beach immediately the moment I arrived in Cuba.
Everything looked just so different, that?s what I have always been intersted in, exploring THE different world, and Cuba has been my beginning :) |
| | Havana Havana is such a fascinating city. Unfortunately I have been pretty young then so I don?t remember too much, except for the nice, old colourful buildings. I?d really love to visit Havana again, it just looks so beautiful and nostalgic!
One thing I also enjoyed were the old cars, which we would already call oldtimers were the normal in Cuba!
And I also remember that tourists had different money than the inhabitants. So it was not possible to give them money, it would looks as if they would have stolen it. You could only buy them things! But I don?t know if that?s still up-to-date?! One song which always reminds me of Santa Maria del Mar is Jon Secada - otro dia ma sin verde (no idea if that?s the right spelling!), I heard that song like every day! |
The Beach Teh Beach of Santa Maria del Mar is great. I guess it´s not as white and turquoise as in Varadero (haven´t been there) but we were alone at the beach, maybe two or three Cubans, and that was great! | | |

jorognst Tue May 25, 2004 09:46 UTC Yes, it is absolutely possible to give money (US$) to anybody. So you will hear a lot of "Dollar please" when walking around. And pay 10-20 times the local price. |
