This is a great World Heritage site to visit. Their are 19 windmills here at Kinderdijk. In 1366 and 1369 people worked on their hands and knees to dig two canals trhough Alblasserwaard to Kinderdijk, designed to take away excess rain water to the river Lek. In 1738 eight windmills were built as the canals could no longer cope, in 1740 another eight was built to protect the surrounding land from flooding. I am not sure when the others were built. |
