Hvar is the fourth largest island at 182 square miles (300 square km). It is even sunnier than Brac, with almost 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. However, there is enough rain to keep the island green and to maintain the beautiful fields of lavender, rosemary, sage, marjoram and thyme and the carefully cultivated vineyards. Many people remark that in the spring, Hvar smells like a herbalist shop! When in Hvar, you must purchase some lavender oil, which is the major export of the island.
The hoteliers on the island pride themselves on consistently good weather - if there is more than four hours of rain per day, they give a reduction on your stay and if snow falls (which happens once a year, on average) your stay is free!
The main resorts are Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Vrboska, Jelsa and Sucuraj.
We arrived at Starigrad and then took the bus to Hvar town
Hvar Town, is built around a picturesque harbour presided over by a hilltop fortress. Chic cafes and restaurants focus on the main square, lined with elegant 15th-century ýpalacesý and the much photographed Renaissance Cathedral. Hvar Town claims to have more hours of sunshine than any other resort on the Adriatic, and hotels offer free accommodation in the unlikely event of a snowfall. Slightly less sophisticated, but equally well equipped with hotels and bathing areas, is the friendly town of Jelsa.
Hvar town is fantastic and exciting. But please do rent a car and explore the island. The smell of lavender stays with you for long afterwards and this is thing that you will remember. The best smelling place in the world!

We did not have enough time to get to this island, but wished we could have. You surely enjoyed the scenery and water setting. Your comments and pictures are good.
We would love to get to Croatia - this page has beautiful pictures. Some day.......
Thanks for dropping by my Vis page Mariana! It seems you had a very pleasant vacation in Croatia. I used to spend my summer holidays in Hvar staying in Stari Grad. Many wonderful memories from that time! :)
Another great page
MrL's grandmother came from Hvar and we are making our first trip there this summer. Your page is a nice introduction -thanks -leyle
Good morning Marina! HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to you from Finland! I've been browsing your Croatia pages because I am planning to take my granddaughter there in summer. I found a lot of good info from them and will be back for more later. Great pages!
What a joy, reading this page and viewing your pictures! I'll order gregada, Plenkovic Plavac, rozata and prosek. ("salt place" = Ston, on Peljesac peninsula)
Looks like you had a good time, pity we did not rent a car when we went, seem like we missed a lot
Yes, walking is nowadays almost forgotten way of transport, but definitely the best way to explore and smell islands like Hvar.
I love Hvar too! Is the first pic on this homapage referred to Starigrad or Trogir? I think it is the main square of Trogir.
