After a far too long absense, I am back in Vienna and enjoying it every bit as much as last time. Austria the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Strauss family, Adolf Hitler and Arnold Schwarzenegger, shows you very diverse country that offers you lots to see and do. You will not be in Austria for very long and you will be introduced to Sissy. This was the nickname for Empress Elisabeth their favorite royal. On the culinary side they gave us Linzer Torte and the world famous Sacher Torte first made in the hotel Sacher in Vienna
One of the great capitals of Europe, Vienna was for centuries home to the Habsburg rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today the empire is long gone, but many reminders of the city's imperial heyday remain, carefully preserved by the tradition-loving Viennese. When it comes to the arts, the glories of the past are particularly evergreen, thanks to the cultural legacy created by the many artistic geniuses nourished here.
Vienna is a Baroque city, and as visitors explore churches filled with statues of golden saints and pink-cheeked cherubs, wander through treasure-packed museums, or while away an afternoon in one of those multitudinous meccas of mocha (the inevitable cafés), they begin to feel lapped in lashings of rich, delicious, whipped cream -- the beloved Schlagobers that garnishes most Viennese pastries.
This was the first city I ever visited outside my own country. Getting to know this city is definitely one of the most pleasant pastimes you can enjoy. It is one of the oldest settlements of the European capital cities and here one senses the history of Europe more than anywhere else. According to the Brockhaus Encyclopedia, the Viennese are a sensuous, open-minded, cosmopolitan, likeable, gemutlich, nonchalant and light hearted people. You will discover this shortly after arriving in the city. They teach you very quickly to eat your salad at 16h00 as dinner is served quite late. They love their coffee and cake, so who can fault them. I just love them.
Vienna International Airport (VIE) (PHONE: 01/7007-0 for flight information) is in Schwechat, about 19 km (12 mi) southeast of the city
Getting from the airport to town
Buses leave the airport frequently for the city air terminal (Am Stadtpark, PHONE: 01/5800-33369 or 01/2300), by the Hilton.
Buses also run every hour (every half hour on weekends and holidays Apr.-Sept.) from the airport to the Westbahnhof (West Train Station) and the Südbahnhof (South Train Station). Be sure you get on the right bus! The one-way fare for all buses is EUR5.10.
A taxi from the airport to downtown Vienna costs about EUR25-EUR37; agree on a price in advance. Cabs (legally) do not meter this drive, as airport fares are more or less fixed (legally again) at about double what the metered fare would be.
The cheapest cab service to the airport is C+K Airport Service (PHONE: 01/1731, FAX: 01/689-6969), charging a set price of EUR19.62, plus usually a EUR2 tip.
- Pros:Great transport system, lovely people
- Cons:Still looking
- In a nutshell:City of love and music
