  • The Colosseum dates back to 72 A.D and is situated at Piazzale del Colosseo. This is ancient Romes best known monument and was the arena of games and gladiators. The largest structure of its kind ever to be built, it was capable of seating 50,000 spectators. Only about one third of the original building remains.

  • The Vatican City is a state within a city. This tiny sovereign state contains the residence of the Pope, the world’s largest church and most famous square and many art treasures. It has its own post office and issues its own stamps. It is governed by the Pope and protected by a small army of Swiss Guards

The largest Catholic church ever built, consecrated in 1626 after many years of construction under the direction of several famous architects including, Bramante, Raphael and Michelangelo. Among the chief objects of interest are the 5th century bronze statue of St Peter, his tomb under the altar and then of course most famous of all is Michelangelo’s Pieta. Open 7am – 6pm daily but closed on Sunday during services for tourists.

Grand Hotel Tiberio was the worst part of our trip! The staff was rude, the room - more like a bad motel, any requests were ignored. Thank goodness everyone else and the city itself was so amazing! :) Go to Rome! But don't stay at Grand Hotel Tiberio.

Great tips! We'll be in Rome this summer before leaving on a Med. cruise. I see your cruise left from Barcelona. I just can't wait to leave! Hope your cruise was great!
