Napier is another example of a town named after a member of the British colonial government. Sir George Napier was Governor of the Cape between 1834 and 1844. If you look for the largest building in South African towns it will normally be the Dutch Reformed Church. Although Napier is only a small place, it has a very grand church. In fact, so illustrious is the place of worship that it has been declared a National Monument. The surrounding fields have a very tempting harvest in summer time, with a crop of the sweetest strawberries. Adding to the beauty of this rural area are golden swathes of wheat, and sheep grazing on smaller pastures. |
