Things To Do: The various baths
  • Tip Rating:
  • it is supposed that these were constructed as a gymnasium. So it seems even in those days, people were obsessed with staying healthy and slim. The hot water section was unearthed near the big rock on the slope. There were also a frigidarium, tepidarium, resting rooms, reading rooms and sitting rooms in the baths. They were built in the 2nd century but were restored, and new rooms were added in later years

  • After the Temple of Hadrian, on the way up the foot of Panayir mountian, this is the second building restored on the left. This fountain, 12m high, had two storeys. Curettes Road: Curetes Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • The rise in the street offers a great view before we arrived at the library. It must have been a wonderfull site in its hayday with all the romans wondering about in their traditional gear and all. I really enjoyed this view and could not wait to get to the bottom

    Hadrian Temple: Curetes Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Theodosius restored this temple in 391 A.D and opened it to the public in honour of his father General Theodosius who was hanged innocently. The ruins in front of the temple belonged to the the rich. The little sculptures of Medusa and other's on the second wall is really fantastic and worth a closer look

    Celsus Library: Library of Celcus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Now this is what everyone knows long before they even visit this site. The best known landmark of Turkey! C Julius had this library built in honour of his father C Celsus in the year 135 A.D. When you climb the nine stairs to the salon you will see four statues symbolizing Justice, Virtue, etc. The niches in the walls were used for books. The inscription at the northern end of the library is in Latin and another inscription at the southern end is in Greek and they are about Celsus and his son Aquila. Celsus grave can be found at the back.

  • When you are there, you can see the two inscriptions inscribed in Greek and Latin on the marble between the south of the Agora and the Library. These tablets were the front part of a colossal portal erected by two slaves in order to render their indebtness to Emperor Augustus who had forgiven them and bestowed their freedom upon them.
