This unique city of almost 20 million souls - and growing at a rate of a thousand a day- is the biggest industrial and commercial centre in Brazil. The greater São Paulo urban area is ten times the size of New York City. The huge buildings buzz with telephones , telexes and - talk. Businessmen flesh off the breakfast shuttle from Rio speed to their offices over complex network of express way. |
And yet, despite the sophistication, a frontier spirit lingers on in this largest of all Latin America cities. Because once fortunes had been made - in gold, diamonds, rubber, livestock, coffee- the money had to be spent somewhere.The riches were ploughed back into the city. Gigantic structures cork-screws, waves, towers, turrets and pyramides - testify to the creative spirit of Brazil architects and engineers. |
And that's not all : parks and museums , cool havens of rest and culture, dot the city and São Paulo's myriad restaurant provide top cousine from all over the world.
As the sun goes down the first lights of evening twinkle through the mist , tourists may begin to feel the spirit of te samba and sense why the city is sometimes called 'the business man's heaven'.
